When Michigan "shuts down" on Monday, it will give all of us an opportunity to find out how many things can be done on the Internet.
Did you know that most Secretary of State functions and DNR licenses can be obtained in the comfort of your home, on your computer?
Before running out on Friday to purchase a new tag for your plate, or a small game license, go to the following addresses, and see if what you need is available:
Secretary of State: http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1627---,00.html
Department of Natural Resources: http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/welcome.asp
Master these web sites and you will be saying, "Shutdown? What shutdown?"

Thanks for the info on the DNR. I didn't realize you could do some of that online. I love doing stuff online--it saves waiting in line.
Keep up the good work!!
Yupper just changed my address online with SOS. Got the little sticker in the mail about 2 weeks later. As long as it is registered with SOS you are good to go. There are lots of things you an do on the net without every leaving your living room. People just need to quit panicking.
Don't sweat the petty stuff.......... oh well you already heard that one I won't finish it.
Shut er down. Make Jenny look like the turkey she is.
Oooh, and don't forget about burn permits, too!
all that is very true....only who is going to mail your tags to you? go ahead and spend your money you will still wait to have your license plate tags til people get back....Really hoping you get pulled over!!!
Hey, thanks for all the updates . . .I'm really interested in how this will work...
Who's going to process those transactions if there's no staff working?
There is *nothing* I need state government to do for me that I can't do for myself, with the possible exception of maintaining the roads. For example: so the Secretary of State's office is going to shut down? Big deal! Doesn't anybody realize that a license is just a form of taxation? It's not like the driver's license test prevents bad drivers from getting on the road. The same is true for most of the functions of state government: they're non-essential. Guess what? As a state we have to learn to do without the non-essential right now.
The Detroit News is saying that the biggest loss of the State Police shutdown will be the crime lab. Gee, is that something that's ripe for privatization or what?! You don't have to be a state-funded agency to test DNA, all you have to be is competent in the science and equipped properly. Y'mean we couldn't find a private company to do these sorts of things? I highly doubt that's true.
I'm quite sure the list of things we could remove as burdens from the taxpayers goes on and on. Ever hear all those ads on the radio promoting Michigan tourism? See the billboards alongside the freeway? All of them are funded by you and me via the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. If you've never bought advertising, then you might not realize how expensive it is. It's not uncommon for just ONE billboard alongside a major road to cost $30K/month. That's where your tax dollars go, folks!
Sorry for the rant. We really and truly have to get back to basics in this state. Thank you for holding strong, Jack.
