Is Detroit Dysfunctional?

Allow me to relate a note I received recently from a friend. This note requires no comment from me. Read it and weep.

"We spent the weekend visiting the kids in Royal Oak. Visited the Cranbrook science museum & also the Detroit Institute of Art. (I had not been there in years). As we went into the DIA, there were two places to stand in line to get admission tickets. One line (with two clerks) for DIA Members. The other line (with one clerk) for everyone else. The non-member line had about 20 people in it and was moving slowly. There was no one in the member line. I casually asked the security guard who came by if perhaps one of the two clerks who had no one in their line could help out the other clerk in the non-member line. I was told, "No, they belong to a different union." NO WONDER THIS STATE IS IN SUCH A FIX! Common sense (& courtesy) are thrown out the window because of a union!"

Or the security guard just said that to make him go away. But I guess we'll never know...

It is amazing...some day the unions will wake up and realize they need the employer. If they work together, all will benefit. But the odds of that happen are slim and none.

I am thrilled to death that the auto industry is getting their rear ends kicked by the imports. I'm all for national pride but the unions and patty waist auto companies are getting exactly what they deserve. They were big shots when they had control of the market and led us all around by the nose. Detroit can fall into the lake and the rest of the state will be in better shape. It's the union mentality that gets all state employees 12.5 holidays per year. In small business we're lucky to have five. State employees average $51,000 per year plus benefits. That's average; i.e. janitors on up. The state average for all people is $10,000 under that. Plus their disability insurance is paid 100%, as is their dental (most of us don't even have dental insurance) and in many cases 100% of their health care insurance. Who deserves that? In business the two greatest costs are inventory and personnel. I propose cutting pay and benefits for all government employees to match the average citizen. If everyone would look over the Govenors budget line by line you would be appalled at the waste. The State doesn't need more money, they need to spend what they have wisely. That will never happen so it's time the electorate wake up and put a stop to it. Get rid of the Single Business Tax AND the Michigan Business Tax. And by the way, why on earth do we spend 17% of the entire education budget (which happens to be the lions share of the entire budget) on the deaf and blind. Do they make up 17% of the population? This world is wacked!
