Bridge to Canada: The Plot Thickens

As reported in Capitol Confidential: "MIRS has reported that all 12 Democrats in the state senate — only four of whom are from Detroit — will vote “yes” on a controversial Detroit-Windsor bridge, but only if the deal includes a wish list of “community benefits” being written by Sen. Tupac Hunter, D-Detroit." Read the full story here.

The wish list this year seems to have been toned down (at least in verbage), but last sessions testimony on the Tlaib community benefit bill seemed to revolve around the creation of a community nonprofit, and how many paid jobs the nonprofit would create. PEOPLE NEED TO BE COMPENSATED VERY FAIRLY for any eminent domain takings. Especially in this case, where property might be taken to guarantee 10% profit levels for public pension fund investors and MDOT profit sharing. But guaranteed, long term employment would seem to be something new, and the focus should be mostly on affected property owners, not just the community as a whole.
